About Carl Kelsch

“I can name a dozen movies that have changed my life in some way.”

Carl Kelsch is a writer/director and all-around creator who gravitates toward the medium of film because he knows it has the power to affect people’s lives. “A good movie or TV show expresses a worldview that we can engage with, forcing us to reflect on our own sense of the world.”

Carl has written over a dozen short films while also working for media companies like Condé Nast and Hearst. As a screenwriter, he notably collaborated with director Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface) on The Pod. As a director, Carl has worked with Emmy-nominated cinematographer Ava Berkofsky and MacArthur fellowship recipient Okwui Okpokwasili (Bronx Gothic). He lives in the NYC area with his partner Tony and their dog.

Education & Background

Carl received his B.F.A. from NYU’s Tisch School of Arts where he studied playwriting and screenwriting. While at NYU, he interned at the popular Fifth Night screenplay reading series as well as at Scenario Magazine. After graduating, he wrote script coverage for Walden Media, producers of the Narnia films.

Theater & Stage Experience

As a writer, performer and standup, Carl has appeared at various venues in NYC, including the Toyota Comedy Festival with the now-defunct sketch troupe Famous Corporation. He also co-created the musical Jonestown, which received a developmental reading at The York Theatre Company.

Screenwriting Experience

Carl started his writing career by optioning his horror screenplay Tantrum to legendary production company Good Machine. He has since written nine other unproduced feature screenplays, including Kin, a Zoetrope Screenplay Competition Semi-Finalist. “I love giving feedback on screenplays and manuscripts.” Reach out with an inquiry if you have a project you need feedback on.
